Many mathematically gifted adolescents are characterized as being indolent, underachieving and unsuccessful despite their high cognitive ability. This is often due to difficulties with social and emotional development. However, research on social and emotional interactions in gifted adolescents has been limited. The purpose of this study was to observe differences in complex social strategic behaviors between gifted and average adolescents of the same age using the repeated Ultimatum Game. Twenty-two gifted adolescents and 24 average adolescents participated in the Ultimatum Game. Two adolescents participate in the game, one as a proposer and the other as a responder. Because of its simplicity, the Ultimatum Game is an apt tool for investigating complex human emotional and cognitive decision-making in an empirical setting. We observed strategic but socially impaired offers from gifted proposers and lower acceptance rates from gifted responders, resulting in lower total earnings in the Ultimatum Game. Thus, our results indicate that mathematically gifted adolescents have deficiencies in social valuation and mentalization.

Gifted adolescents are considered to have high IQs with advanced mathematical and logical performances, but are often thought to suffer from social isolation or emotional mal-adaptation to the social group. The underlying mechanisms that cause stereotypic portrayals of gifted adolescents are not well known. We aimed to investigate behavioral performance of gifted adolescents during social decision-making tasks to assess their affective and social/non-social cognitive abilities. We examined cooperation behaviors of 22 gifted and 26 average adolescents during an iterative binary public goods (PG) game, a multi-player social interaction game, and analyzed strategic decision processes that include cooperation and free-riding. We found that the gifted adolescents were more cooperative than average adolescents. Particularly, comparing the strategies for the PG game between the two groups, gifted adolescents were less sensitive to loss, yet were more sensitive to gain. Additionally, the behavioral characteristics of average adolescents, such as low trust of the group and herding behavior, were not found in gifted adolescents. These results imply that gifted adolescents have a high cognitive ability but a low ability to process affective information or to adapt in social groups compared with average adolescents. We conclude that gain/loss sensitivity and the ability to adapt in social groups develop to different degrees in average and gifted adolescents.

[PhD Thesis] Neural mechanisms of decision making in the Ultimatum Game in the context of interactions between emotion and reason

This thesis aims to understandneural mechanisms of high-level cognitive decision making in the context ofcomplex interactions between emotion and reason. To achieve this goal, I madethree major approaches.

1. Neuroscience:Understanding spatiotemporal dynamics of high-level cognitive decision making.

2. Neuromedicine:Understanding functional connectivity in schizophrenia during complex socialand emotional decision making

3. Neuroengineering:Development of EEG hyperscanning system

The purpose of the first approachwas to provide answers to the where and when questions of cortical activationwith high spatiotemporal resolution using magnetoencephalographies (MEGs) andto investigate effective connectivity between regions of the brain, with thegoal of extending our understanding of the information transmission mechanismsthat underlie high-level cognitive decision making. This is the first study toinvestigate spatiotemporal dynamics of high-level cognitive decision makingusing MEGs. The results presented here suggest that MEG is an optimaltool for investigating the neural mechanisms underlying the decision-makingprocess. The purpose of the second approach was to investigate local andlong-range cortical disconnections or dysfunctions in schizophrenic patientsand then to assess the underlying dynamics and functional connectivity betweencertain brain regions. The reported findings support the notion that impairedlocal and long range synchronization can both establish underlying mechanismsof dysfunctional complex decision-making in schizophrenic patients. The purposeof the third approach was to develop an EEG hyperscanning system toevaluate social and emotional interactions between the two players, and then toassess the underlying dynamics and the effective connectivity between andwithin the brain regions of the two players. This is the first study to analyzetemporal dynamics and social interactions in human decision-making usingsimultaneous EEG recordings. We believe that the use of EEG hyperscanningmethodology in the present study opens up new prospects for investigating thebrain activities of two people during real-life face-to-face socialinteractions.

본 박사학위논문은 감정과 이성의 복잡한 상호작용 관점에서 고등의사결정과정의 신경메커니즘을 이해하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이 목표를 이루기 위해 세 가지 중요한 접근을 시도하였다.

1. 뇌과학: 고등의사결정과정의 시공간적 동역학 이해

2. 뇌의학: 복잡한 사회적/감정적 의사결정과정 동안 정신분열증의기능적 연결성 이해

3. 뇌공학: 뇌파(EEG) 동시측정시스템 개발

첫 번째 접근의 목적은, 높은 시공간적 해상도를 가지는 뇌자도(MEG)를 이용하여 대뇌활성화가 언제 어디에서 일어나는지에 대한 해답을 제시하고,뇌의 각 영역 사이의 효과적 연결성(effective connectivity)을 조사하여, 고등의사결정의 기저를 이루는 정보교환 메커니즘을 이해하는 것이다. 본 연구는 뇌자도를 이용한 고등의사결정과정의 시공간적 동역학을 탐구하는 최초 시도이다. 본 연구의 결과는 뇌자도가 의사결정과정의 기저를 이루는 신경 메커니즘을 탐구하기 위한 최적의 도구임을 제안하였다. 두 번째 접근의목적은, 정신분열증 환자의 근거리와 장거리 대뇌 단절 및 기능 장애를 탐구하고, 특정 뇌 영역 간의 기저동역학과 기능적 연결성을 평가하는 것이다. 본 연구의 결과는, 약화한 근거리와 장거리 동기화가 모두 정신분열증환자의 복잡한 의사결정 장애에 대한 기저 메커니즘을 확립할 수 있다는 개념을 지지한다. 세 번째 접근의 목적은, 두 사람 사이의 사회적/감정적 상호작용을 평가하기 위한 뇌파 동시측정시스템을 개발하고, 이를 이용하여 두사람 사이의 뇌 영역 및 두 사람 각각의 뇌 영역의 기저동역학과 효과적 연결성을 분석하는 것이다. 본 연구는 뇌파 동시측정시스템을 이용하여 의사결정과정의 시계열 동역학과 사회적 상호작용을 분석한 최초 시도이다. 본연구의 뇌파 동시측정 방법론은 얼굴을 마주 보는 실제 상황에서 사회적 상호작용에서의 뇌 활성화 분석 연구를 위한 새로운 가능성을 열었다.

쇼트트랙 판정시비의 뇌과학적 해결방법

2월 25일 쇼트트랙 여자 3,000m 계주 결승전.
"슉슉쇽쇽" 한국의 마지막주자 김민정이 중국 선수의 안쪽을 파고들며 선두로 나섰다. 이 과정에서 김민정선수의 오른손이 중국 선수의몸에 닿았다. 중국 선수가 살짝 휘청하는 사이 김민정 선수는 앞으로 치고 나갔고, 독주 끝에 1위로 결승선을 통과했다.

또 한 번 역전의 드라마가완성되는 듯했다. 하지만, 기쁨도 잠시, 심판진은 한국이 중국선수를 밀었다며 실격 판정을 내렸다. (impeding 선언)

핵심은 김민정선수가 코너에서추월하는 과정에서 팔의 움직임에 중국선수의 진로를 방해하려는 고의성이 있었느냐이다.

"진로방해 의도"
의도는 비디오 판독으로 알아내기어렵다. 심판의 주관이 크게 작용할 수밖에 없다. 객관화하는방법이 없을까. 김민정선수의 팔 동작이 고의적 방해가 아니라 자연스러운 스케이팅 과정이었다는 것을 어떻게증명할까.

방법이 있다.
쇼트트랙 선수들은 헬멧을쓴다. 뇌파 센서를 헬멧에 부착하면 된다. 실시간으로 모든선수의 뇌파를 1,000분의 1초 단위로 측정하고, 무선으로 송신한다. 선수들의 경기력에는 영향을 미치지 않는다. 수집된 뇌파 정보를 분석해서, 순간순간 선수들의 긴장상태, 집중 정도, 운동궤적의 방향설정 의도를 실시간으로 파악할 수 있다. 좀 더 공정한 경기가 가능해진다.

Praamstra의 논문에 의하면 의도적 행동을 할 때 두정엽(parietal)에서 전두엽(frontal)으로 뇌 활성이 순차적으로발생한다 (Praamstra et al. 2005). 행동 의도가 어느 방향으로 발생하느냐에 따라 순차적인뇌 활성의 진행방향이 왼쪽, 오른쪽으로 바뀐다. 뇌활성의시공간적 정보를 이용해 선수가 몸을 움직이는 방향에 대한 집중도와 의도를 실시간으로 파악할 수 있게 되는 것이다.움직임의 의도 추적 시스템이다.

가까운 미래 올림픽에서 이런해설을 듣게 되길 바란다.

구글어스 매니아가 많다. 신기했다. 쉬는 시간에 구글어스로 세계여행을 한다.

나도 대전으로 돌아와서 구글어스로 세계여행을 하기 시작했다.

2. 맥북, 부트캠프 윈도, 3벌식

이 조합으로 랩탑을 쓰는 사람을 발견했다. 대단하다!

3. 올레길

올레길을 걸었다.

길이 끝날 즈음 인터뷰를 했다. 아마도 올레길 홍보자료를 만드려는 것 같았다.

추워서 콧물이 나왔다.

진부한 인터뷰는 하지 말아야겠다고 생각했다.

인터뷰에 적절한 좋은 말을 해야 한다고 머리로는 생각했지만, 입으로는 엉뚱한 말이 나왔다.

"올레길 걸어본 소감이 어떠세요?"

"엄청 추워요 ㅡㅠㅡ"

"길게 좀 말씀 해주세요"

"음... 오는 길에 말똥이 너무 많았어요. 걸을 때는 바닥만 보고 걸어야 했구요. 중간에 선물태그가 숨겨져 있다는데 앞에 가는 사람들이 다 가져가서 뒤에 가는 사람들은 하나도 못찾았어요ㅠ 일등만 선물 받는 더러운 세상이에요." (난 진심이었다)

(답답하다는 듯이) "그런 거 말고 좋은 말 좀 해주세요"

너무 추웠다.

나는 결국 '일상을 탈출해, 자연을 느끼며 즐겁고 상쾌했다' 고 대답했다.

나는 왜 사람들이 진부한 인터뷰를 하게 되는지 알았다.

구글검색대회

구글검색대회에 참가했다.

한 달 동안 하루에 3문제씩 매일 풀면 '구글 티셔츠'를 준다고 해서 참가했다.

문제는 쉽다. 그냥 검색문제, 최단거리 찾는 문제, 특정 이미지 찾는 문제 같은 것들이다.

한 달 동안 다 참가했더니, 운 좋게도 결선에 진출하게 되었다.

결선이라고 문제가 특별히 어려운 건 아니었지만, 시간이 부족했다.

40분 동안 40문제를 풀어야 했는데 시간이 정말 부족했다.

빠른 눈과 빠른 손가락이 요구되는 대회였다.

나름 집중해서 풀었는데, 더 손가락 빠른 사람이 있었다. 아쉽다.

두 번 참가할 대회는 못된다.

문제를 다 풀고 나니, 도미노를 세우라고 한다.

초딩 때 해보고 처음 해본다. 은근히 긴장됐다.

'도미노 전문강사'가 미리 디자인해 놓은 판에, 나는 색깔 맞춰 도미노를 세웠다.

'주말에 내가 지금 여기서 뭔 삽질을 하고 있는 거지?' 하는 생각이 잠깐 들었다.

도미노를 하면 인내력, 지구력, 순간대처능력이 향상된다고, '도미노 전문강사'가 말했다. 나는 허리, 다리가 아프고 손이 떨렸다.

두 번 참가할 대회는 못된다.

그래도 유투브에 올라온 동영상을 보니 뿌듯하다.

한 번은 참가할 만하다.

정문술선생님 학과방문

"기부는 소유의 끝이 아니라, 소유의 절정이다."

KAIST에 300억을 기부해서 "바이오및뇌공학과"를 만든 정문술 선생님이 처음으로 학과를 방문했다. 8년만이다. 나도 벌써 학과와 함께 8년의 시간을 보냈다.

학과의 그동안 성과를 발표하는 시간이 있었다. 나도 한 섹션을 맡았다. 발표하는 나를, 정문술 선생님이 환한 미소를 머금은 표정으로 바라보던 모습이 잊히지 않는다. 정문술 선생님은 "20년 후에 우리 국민을 먹여 살릴 인재를 길러달라"고 하며 평생 모은 300억을 기부하셨는데, 스스로 그런 인재가 될 수 있을지, 부담감이 눈앞으로 다가오는 순간이었다.

방문 다음 날 정문술 선생님이 다음과 같은 방문소감을 전해주셨다.

정문술 빌딩이 하나의 큰 벌통 같은 느낌을 받았다.
모든 방에서 미래 국가를 위한 꿀이 가득 들어 있는 것처럼 알차고 희망적이다.
교수 학생 모든 분이 정말 똑똑하고 자랑스럽다. 어려운 것을 어쩌면 그렇게 쉽게 설명하는지 놀랍다.
조그만 돈 가지고 그만한 일을 일구어 낸 것을 보니, 감동적이다. 돈 쓴 보람이 있다.
아내도 헛돈 쓴 것이 아니라는 생각을 하는 것 같아 기쁘다.

나도 빨리 세상에 나가 사회에 기여하고, '조그만 돈'도 기부하고 싶다.

MIT OpenCourseWare 를 아는가? MIT 의 강의 동영상과 수업자료를 무료로 전세계에 제공하는 서비스이다. 처음 이 웹사이트를 접한 경험은 감동 그 자체였다. 세계 어느 곳에서나 누구나 MIT 의 강의를 볼 수 있다니! 2002년에 50개의 강의를 공개한 이후로, 2009년 현재 1890개의 강의가 공개되어 있고, 계속 추가되고 있다. 전세계에서 한달에 백만명의 사람들이 강의를 듣기 위해 방문한다. 서비스를 시작한 이후로 일년에 56%씩 방문자가 증가하고 있다. 전세계 많은 학생들이 훌륭한 강의를 찾아보고 정보를 얻고 영감을 받았을 것이다.

MIT 만이 아니다. 스탠포드 (Stanford Engineering Everywhere), 버클리 (Berkeley Webcast), 예일 (Open Yale Courses) 등 세계를 선도하는 일류대학에서 비슷한 서비스를 제공한다. 누가 강의를 볼까? 자신의 전문분야가 아닌 다른 분야에 관심을 갖고 지식을 쌓으려고 방문하는 일반인들이 48%, 수강계획을 세우고 수업에 참고자료로 활용하는 학생들이 32%, 교육자가 17% 를 차지한다.

KAIST 도 이런 서비스를 시작하면 어떨까? KAIST 에서 열리는 훌륭한 강의들을 무료로 제공하는 것이다. KAIST 를 꿈꾸는 훌륭한 고등학생들에게 영감을 주고, KAIST 재학생들에게도 학과를 결정하거나, 수강계획을 세울 때 도움을 줄 수 있다. 장기적으로 우리나라 대학 교육의 질 향상에도 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

요약하면, ROI 분석을 멀리하고, multiple comparison 을 사랑하자는 내용입니다. 쉽게 말해 꼼수를 쓰지 말고, 기본에 충실하자는 말입니다.

1. We first consider a nonselective analysis (for example, brain mapping with correction for multiple comparisons).
2. If selective analysis is needed, we then assess whether the results statistics are independent of the selection criterion under the null hypothesis.
3. If this has been explicitly demonstrated, then all data are used for selective analysis. Otherwise, an independent dataset is used for the selective analysis to ensure independence of the results under the null hypothesis and prevent circularity.

구글의 노예

나는 구글의 노예다. 구글로 검색하고, 구글 스칼라로 논문을 찾는다. 쥐메일과 쥐톡에 온종일 접속된 상태이고, 구글리더로 블로그와 신문기사를 읽는다. 구글 캘린더로 모든 스케줄을 저장한다. 구글 다큐먼트에 갑자기 떠오른 아이디어나 중요한메모를 기록해 놓는다. 구글에 내 모든 정보를 제공한 느낌이다.

스스로 구글의 노예라는 생각이 들지만,노예생활에서 벗어날 가능성이 커 보이지 않는다. 구글은 내 필요를 무서울 정도로 잘 만족한다. 쥐메일(Gmail)은기크메일(Geek Mail)의 줄임이라는 말이 있을 정도로, 효율적인 다양한 기능들을 제공한다. 답장을 통해 주고받는메일을 하나의 글 타래로 묶어 주는 기능은 정말 감동적이다. 단순한 디자인에 빠른 인터페이스는 다른 이메일과 비교할 수없다. 구글 캘린더는 문자로 스케줄을 보내준다. 노예 생활에서 벗어나기는커녕 더 깊이 빠져들고 있다.

나 같은 노예들이 늘어갈수록 구글의 영향력은 커져만 간다. 구글에 제공된 막대한 양의 정보는 엄청난 일들을 가능하게 한다. 구글에서 지난 11월 네이처에 논문을 발표했다. 독감(flu)과 관련된 단어의 검색 개수의 경향을 분석해서, 독감의 유행을 빠르고 정확하게 예측할 수 있다는 내용이다. 아래 그래프에서 빨간색 선이 독감 유행의 실제 비율이고, 검은색 선이 검색 개수를 이용한 모델의 예측 값이다. 정확히 예측한다.

이런 예측값은 사람들이 인터넷을 더 많이 사용할수록 더 정확해질 것이다. google trends 에서 실제로 키워드들의 검색 경향을 볼 수 있다. 네이버 인기검색어 순위의 구글버전이라고 할 수 있겠다. 다양한 검색어들의 시간별, 나라별, 도시별, 언어별 검색패턴의 그래프를 보면 구글이 가진 엄청난 정보력에 섬뜩해진다.

몇 달 전 서울대에서 열린 International Conference of Complex Networks 학회에서KAIST 물리학과의 정하웅 교수는 google search 를 이용하여 지난 대선 때 후보들의 웹페이지 개수와 실제 득표율과의관계를 분석한 결과를 보여줬다. 결과는 놀랍게도 선형의 아주 높은 상관관계를 보였다. (상관계수 0.98) 앞으로는 돈과 시간이 많이 드는설문조사가 필요 없어지겠다.

점점 세상이 복잡해질수록 엄청난 양의 정보가 쏟아져 나온다. 많은 문제들이 정보습득의 불균형, 잘못된 정보, 정보 왜곡에 의해 발생한다. 이 많은 정보를 분석하고 가치 있는 정보를 찾아내는 것이 점점 중요해진다. 정보를 가진 자, 정보를 지식으로, 지식을 가치로 바꾸는 자가 세상을 지배한다.

뇌로 뽑은 슈퍼볼 광고 1등?!

미국 슈퍼볼 광고는 매년 사람들의 이목을 집중시킵니다. 저도 슈퍼볼이 끝나면 항상, 베스트로 선정된 광고들을 찾아봤었는데, 올해는 아쉽게도 '이거 대박이다!' 하는 광고는 없었던 것 같습니다. 그런데 올해에는 뇌파를 이용해서 슈퍼볼 광고 순위를 매긴 회사가 있네요. 샌즈리서치라는 회사에서 '뉴로미디어 분석'을 했습니다.

1위는 브리지스톤의 광고였는데요. 아래 비디오를 보면, 시간별로 뇌파가 변해가는 양상을 볼 수 있습니다. 두정엽과 전운동피질(parietal and premotor area) 이 주로 활성화되고, 감자머리 캐릭터의 입술이 통통 튀어나올 때(!) 특히 등바깥쪽 전두엽(dorsal lateral frontal area )이 활성화됩니다.
전운동영역은 운동을 계획할 때 주로 활성화됩니다. 광고를 보면서 엉덩이가 들썩들썩하는 거겠죠. 등바깥쪽 전두엽 영역은 기억과 언어처리과정에 연관되어 있고, 고등의사결정과정에도 중요한 역할을 합니다.

뉴로마케팅의 시작이겠죠!!
재미있는 시도인 것 같습니다.

그녀는 지금 무슨 생각을 하고 있을까?
영화 '왓 위민 원트'의 멜 깁슨이 하는 것처럼 다른 사람들의 생각을 읽을 수 있으면 정말 좋을 것 같다는 상상을 하곤 합니다.

생각을 읽는 기술, 마인드 리딩이 5년 안에 가능하다고 합니다. 저는 10년은 걸릴 거라고 생각했는데... 미국 CBS의 간판 시사프로그램 60 minutes에서 마인드 리딩에 대해 다루었습니다. 흥미진진합니다.

Thought Identification: 생각 아이디
2004년 발생한 화성여대생 살인사건.
유일한 증거였던 청바지에 묻은 정액 DNA 샘플이 국립과학수사연구소에서 분석하는 과정에서 실수로 훼손되어 살인사건의 해결이 사실상 불가능해졌습니다. 정말 안타까운 일입니다.

마인드 리딩이 가능해지면, 범인은 아주 쉽게 잡힐 겁니다. 간단히 용의자의 뇌를 스캔해서 기억을 꺼내보면 될 테니까요. 사람의 기억 자체가 그 사람을 증명하는 아이디가 될 것입니다. 우리가 DNA를 이용해서 범인을 잡아내듯이, 미래에는 기억을 이용해서 범인을 잡아내게 되겠죠. 범인의 기억은 '자백'이 아니라 '증거'가 됩니다.

마케팅에도 활용할 수 있습니다. 사람들의 뇌 반응을 이용해 효과적인 광고를 만들 수 있을 것입니다. 어떤 특정한 문구가 사람들에게 물건을 더 사도록 잘 설득하는지, 어떤 화면과 소리가 물건의 구매에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 정확히 알게 될 겁니다. '효과적인 광고'는 사람들을 '세뇌하는 광고'가 되겠죠.

'친환경' 과 '나이트클럽'
너무 어울리지 않는 조합인데요. 비밀은 압전효과 (Piezoelectric effect) 를 사용한 바닥에 있습니다. 클러버들이 스텝을 밟을 때마다 주어지는 압력을 전기로 바꿔서 조명에 사용합니다. 정말 좋은 아이디어인 것 같습니다.

지난 11월, Society for Neuroscience 2008 학회에서 소개되었던 2009년 뇌과학 10대 트렌드입니다. 제 연구와 관련된 중요한 키워드들이 눈에 들어옵니다.

1. Epigenetics leading to new treatment targets: Newresearch highlights the critical interactions of genes and theenvironment in brain health and development revealing new treatmentstrategies and potential therapeutic targets for obesity, memory loss,addiction and mental illness.

2. 저는 TED의 팬입니다. TED는 Technology, Entertainment, Design과 관련된 "대가"들의 대중강연을 제공합니다. 정말 환상적인 강연들이 많은 것 같습니다. "Ideas worth spreading"이라는 구호도 마음에 듭니다.

TED의 강연들을 보면 어떤 복잡하고 어려운 주제라도 '이렇게 아름답게 전달할 수 있구나!'하고 감탄하게 됩니다. 그만큼 자신의 분야에서 대가이기 때문에 가능한 것이겠지요. 아래 동영상은 <SYNC 싱크>의 저자인 스티븐 스트로가츠의 강연입니다. 자연에서의 동조화(synchronization)에 의한 창발성(emergent property)을 예를 들어가며 흥미롭게 설명하고 있습니다. 자연의 동조화 현상이 원래 "예술"이라서 강연도 "예술"인 게 당연하다는 생각이 들기도 합니다.

분열하는 뇌

지난 목요일, 금요일에는 63빌딩에서 열린 대한신경정신의학회에 참가했습니다. 제가 관심을 두고 연구하고 있는 정신분열증과 도박중독에 대해 큰 세션을 할애하여 다루고 있어서 참가하게 되었습니다.

주로 의사들이 참가하는 학회라서, 임상적인 내용 위주였고, 정신과에서의 행동치료연구들이 많았습니다. 아직 병의 발생 원인 (neural mechanism) 을 탐구하는 내용보다는 '이렇게 해봤더니 이렇게 개선이 되더라.' 하는 연구들이 대부분이었습니다. 항상 학회에서 느끼지만, 여전히 모르는 게 너무 많고, 앞으로 할 일이 너무 많다는 생각이 듭니다. 그래서 더욱 흥미로운 연구분야가 아닐까 생각합니다.

포스터 세션에서는 포스터 발표자들이 전혀 안 보이는 것이 의아했습니다. 포스터 발표하는 시간에는 자신의 포스터 앞에서 질문을 받고, 토론을 하면서 자신도 얻는 것이 많을 텐데 말이죠. 저도 포스터를 보며 드는 의문점들을 물어볼 포스터발표자가 없어서 답답했습니다.

저는 정신분열증 환자의 의사결정과정에 대한 연구를 구연 세션에서 발표했습니다. 최후통첩게임에서 정신분열증 환자들은 수락 비율이 높은데, 결과의 해석에 대해 논란이 많습니다. 환자들은 깊게 생각하지 않고, 눈앞의 이익에 (immediate small reward) 민감해서, 사회적 공정성에 대한 판단을 못 한다고 (fairness valuation) 저는 해석하고 있습니다. 뇌파 결과도 뇌의 각 부분 간의 연결성에 문제가 생겨서 (long range communication & synchronization) 잘못된 의사결정을 (impaired decision making) 한다고 설명이 됩니다.

많은 분들이 제 연구에 관심을 가지고, 질문과 코멘트를 해주셔서 감사했습니다. 자신의 연구를 다른 연구자들과 공유하는 과정은 언제나 흥미진진한 일인것 같습니다.

다크나이트를 봤습니다.
조커가 배트맨에게 묻습니다.
"Why so serious?"

제가 배트맨이라면 이렇게 대답하고 싶을 겁니다.
"잠이 부족해서 그래~"

배트맨은 낮에는 람보르기니를 타고, 밤에는 배트탱크(?)를 타고, 성실하고 지혜로운 비서도 있습니다. 게다가 잘생기기까지;;;
그럼에도 불행하고 항상 우울해하는 이유는 잠이 부족해서입니다.

수면부족은 집중력, 기억력, 사고력 저하를 불러옵니다. 더 기분이나 행동이 불안정해집니다. 수영 잘하는 펠프스가 어릴 때 겪었다는 주의력 결핍 과잉행동장애 (ADHD) 와 증상이 비슷합니다. 낮에도 안 자고, 밤에도 못 자니 문제가 생길 수밖에 없지요.

마지막 장면에서 배트맨은 정의를 지킨다는 나름의 명분 아래 투페이스의 죽음을 왜곡하는 잘못된 의사결정까지 하게 됩니다. 수면부족의 위험성을 알리는 훌륭한 교육영화(?)로 손색없습니다.

993 - 7 = 970

지난 7월 초에는 일주일간 청주의 초정요양원에서 치매실험을 했습니다. 치매 환자와 정상노인들이 천에서 7씩 빼는 계산을 하는 동안, 뇌파를 이용해 정보처리과정의 차이를 알아보는 실험이었는데요.

"할머니~ 1000에서 7 빼면 뭐죠??"
"음... 993."

993까지는 대부분 잘하십니다. 문제는 그다음부터.

"993에서 7 빼면 뭐죠??"
"..."
"몰라! 안해!"

대부분의 할머니, 할아버지들이 답을 회피하거나 '970' 같은 틀린 답을 말씀하십니다. 993에서 7을 빼려면 십의 자리 9를 8로 바꿔 작업기억(working memory)에 저장해 놓고, 13에서 7을 뺀 후, 저장해 놓은 8을 다시 불러와야 합니다. 치매환자는 작업기억에 정보를 저장하고, 저장된 정보를 불러오는 데 문제가 있어서 계산을 못 합니다.

할머니, 할아버지들이 계산하는 동안 뇌에서는 어떤 일이 일어나는지 알아보고자 뇌파(EEG)를 측정하게 됩니다. 뇌파를 측정하려면, 전극이 붙어 있는 모자를 쓰고, 전도성 젤(conductive gel)을 머리에 발라야 합니다. 피험자에게 답답하고 불편한 과정인데다가, 준비하는데 20분 정도 걸립니다. 할머니, 할아버지들에게는 고역이죠.

답답해하시고 힘들어하시는 할머니, 할아버지들을 보면 죄송한 마음이 듭니다. 연구를 하고 논문을 써서 당장 고생하시는 할머니, 할아버지들에게 직접적으로 도움을 드릴 수 없어서 더 그렇습니다. 제가 하는 연구가 언젠가 치매를 이해하고 치료하는데 작은 기여라도 할 수 있게 되길 희망해 봅니다.

ICCS 2008 emotional interaction

지난 화요일에는 연세대에서 International Conference of Cognitive Science 학회가 있었습니다. Neuroscience 세션에서 two person social interaction 에 대한 EEG 연구를 발표했습니다.

Neuroscience paper presentation 세션과 Neuroscience workshop 세션이 동시에 진행되었는데요. workshop 에 좋은 강연들이 있었는데, 발표 때문에 못 들어서 안타까웠습니다. 두 곳 모두 듣고 싶은 사람들이 많았을 텐데, 시간 배치가 아쉬웠습니다.

자기 발표를 보면 좀 민망하기도 하지만, 발표를 객관적으로 볼 수 있고, 잘 몰랐던 문제점을 파악할 수 있어서, 도움이 많이 됩니다. 앞으로 더 좋은 발표 할 수 있게 되기를;;;

Computational modeling of social interaction

오키나와 여름학교에서 연사 중의 한 사람이 강연에서 언급한 내용이 기억에 남습니다. “자신이 이론가일지라도 뇌과학자라면 한 가지 이상 생리실험을 할 줄 알고, 또 해야 한다.” 이론과 실험의 균형을 강조한 말이었습니다.

뇌과학의 연구는 세 가지 큰 틀에서 접근할 수 있습니다. 행동연구 (behavior), 생리연구(physiology), 그리고 이론연구(theory)입니다. 지금까지 행동연구와 생리연구를 해왔고,이번 오키나와 여름학교 참가로, 모델링을 시작했습니다.

3주 동안 프로젝트를 하고, 5분 발표를 했습니다. 5분 동안 핵심을 이야기하는 게 중요하겠지만, 너무 짧지 않았나 하는 생각이 듭니다.

지난 금요일에는 효율적인 논문투고와 영향력 있는 논문작성법에 관한 강연회가 있었습니다. 세계에서 가장 큰 과학저널 출판사인 Elsevier 에디터들이 직접 와서 하는 강연이어서 꼭 참석하고 싶었는데, 이날 치매 실험일정이 있어서 못 갔네요.

고맙게도 강연자료를 공유해줬습니다. Steven Otto 의 강의자료 중에 publishing ethics 부분이 특히 잘 읽어보고 염두에 둬야 할 내용인 것 같습니다.

reinforcement learning 과 Bayesian inference 에 대해 알기 쉽게 설명한 Shin Ishii 의 발표자료입니다. 첫 번째 동영상은 개념적인 설명이 주로 되어 있고, 두 번째 동영상은 최근연구내용이 소개되어 있습니다.

두 번째 동영상은 특히 model based fMRI 를 이용해서 의사결정과정을 밝혀내는 방법론적인 측면에서 제가 연구하는 방향과 일치합니다.

지난 화요일에는 OIST, Neurobiology Research Unit 의 Jeff Wickens 의 강연이 있었습니다.

Synaptic plasticity and behavior 를 주제로 한 일반적인 강연이었습니다. 강연은 대체로 평이했는데, 뇌과학을 모델링하는 이론가로서의 자세에 대한 그의 마지막 슬라이드가 기억에 남습니다.

대통령의 업적

지난 6월6일에는 촛불집회 참가했었습니다. KAIST 학생회에서 버스를 빌려서 관심 있는 학생들이 30명 정도 같이 갔습니다.

5시쯤 을지로에 도착했는데, 이미 사람들이 많더군요. 을지로에서 시청까지 거리시위에 동참했습니다. KAIST 깃발이 보입니다 :)

교통정리 하는 예비군복을 입은 사람들, 민간구호 표지를 붙이고 분주히 움직이는 사람들, 쓰레기 줍는 중고등학생들을 보면서, 시민들의 자발적인 평화시위의 힘을 느꼈습니다.

촛불집회에 참가하고, 대통령이 한가지 잘한 일이 있는 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다.
전 세계 어디서도 볼 수 없는 자발적인 평화시위문화를 정착시킨 것은 '훌륭한 업적'으로 기억되지 않을까요.

오키나와에서 3주 동안 OCNC (Okinawa Computational Neuroscience Course) 여름학교에 참가하게 되었습니다. 해변을 바라보며 강연을 듣고, 바닷바람을 맞으며 모델링 프로젝트를 하고 있습니다. :)

OCNC는 OIST (Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology) 에서 주관하고 있습니다. OIST 는 2001년에 일본에서 융합연구로서의 뇌과학을 제대로 하고자 만든 뇌과학연구소입니다. 우리나라로 생각하면 제주도에 뇌과학연구소를 만든 건데, 제주도에 가끔 가서 놀면 좋겠지만, 계속 살면서 연구하라고 하면 별로 안 좋을 것 같네요.

아침에 일어나 창문을 열면 바다가 보입니다 :)

OCNC에는 전 세계에서 32명의 학생이 선발되었고, 한국인은 혼자이고, 중국인 한 명, 일본인 세 명이 참가하고 있습니다. 올해 정말 운이 좋게도, 두 번이나 여름학교에 참가할 기회를 얻었는데요. 지난번 이탈리아에서 열린 마리 퀴리 스쿨에 비해서 일정이 상대적으로 여유롭습니다. 마리 퀴리 스쿨은 일정이 아침 8시부터 밤 11시까지 있어서 거의 매일 피곤함에 허덕거렸었는데, OCNC는 아침 9시 반에 시작하고, 저녁 먹고는 스케줄이 없습니다. 그래서 더 많은 학생들, 교수들과 생기있게(!) 이야기를 나눌 시간이 많아서 좋은 것 같습니다.

어제는 켄지 도야와 한 시간 정도 둘이서 이야기를 할 기회를 가지게 되었습니다. (켄지는 제가 관심 있는 연구분야인 의사결정, 보상학습 분야에서 세계적인 대가입니다.)
열심히 제가 하는 연구에 대해 설명하고, 이번 여름학교에서 할 모델링 프로젝트에 대해서도 이야기를 나눴습니다. 제이슨의 좋은 차에 대해서도 잠깐 얘기를 했죠. :)

켄지가 좋은 코멘트를 많이 해줘서 정말 의미 있는 시간이었습니다. 제 연구가 최소한 올바른 방향으로 가고 있는 것 같아 다행인 것 같다는 생각도 들었구요.

켄지와 이야기하다가 나온 좋은 아이디어가 하나 있습니다.
Ultimatum Lottery!!
복권으로 *최후통첩게임의 제안자와 응답자를 뽑아서 큰돈으로 게임을 시켜보는 것입니다. 이렇게 하면 돈의 액수에 따라서 최후통첩게임을 할 수 있고, 액수가 변함에 따라서 사람들의 제안 비율과 수락비율이 어떻게 달라지는지 알 수 있게 되겠죠. (100억으로 최후통첩게임을 해볼 수 있는 유일한 방법이 아닐까요.)

좋은 건지 나쁜 건지, 모든 것을 최후통첩게임과 연관하여 생각하는 병이 생긴것 같습니다.

*최후통첩게임
사회적인 상호작용 속에서 인간의 감정과 인지과정이 의사결정에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보려는 게임입니다. 제안자와 응답자, 이렇게 2명이 게임을 하게 됩니다. 제안자는 만원을 받고, 이 돈의 일부를 응답자에게 제시하게 됩니다. 응답자는 돈을 받을지, 안 받을지 결정하고, 받으면 제안자가 제시한 대로 돈을 나눠 갖고, 받지 않으면 제안자와 응답자 모두 돈을 못 받게 됩니다.
고전적인 게임이론에 의하면 제안자는 자신의 이득을 최대화하도록 최소의 비율을 제시하고 (ex. 천원), 응답자는 어떤 제안이라도 수락해야 합니다. 하지만, 실제로는 제안자가 천원을 제시하면 70% 정도의 응답자가 거절하게 됩니다. (제안자가 9천 원을 받는 게 기분이 나쁜 것이죠.)

연구실 4주년 전체 랩세미나

우리 연구실이 만들어진 지 4년이 되었습니다.
제가 연구실에서 연구를 시작한 지는 3년 반이 되었구요.
생각해보면 그동안 연구실에는 참 많은 일이 있었던 것 같습니다.

지금까지 여러 가지 하고 싶은 연구들을 해왔고, 좋은 연구실 동료들 덕분에 랩생활도 즐거웠던 것 같습니다.

이제는 랩사람들이 20여 명 됩니다. 각자 다른 관심사를 가지고, 자신의 연구를 진행해 나가고 있습니다. 서로 너무 다양한 분야를 연구하는 것이, 좋은 점도 있고 나쁜 점도 있겠지만, 적어도 이번 세미나에서는 다른 사람들의 연구를 보며 아주 새로운 아이디어를 얻고, 미처 생각하지 못했던 내 연구의 문제점을 파악하는데 너무나 가치 있는 시간이었습니다.

지금까지의 연구내용을 정리하고 앞으로 나아갈 방향을 정하는데 많은 도움이 되었던 것 같습니다. 길이 조금 밝아진 걸 느낍니다. 모두 감사드려요 :)

두 번 속는 나, 이게 다 옥시토신 때문이다

이런 속담이 있습니다.
Fool me once, shame on you.

한 번 속으면 속인 놈이 나쁜 놈이지만, 두 번 속으면 속은 놈이 바보라는 겁니다.

앞으로 이 속담이 이렇게 바뀔지 모르겠습니다.
Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on oxytocin.

이번 뉴론 저널에 Fehr 그룹에서 옥시토신 호르몬을 코로 흡입하게 하면서 신뢰게임(Trust game)을 수행한 논문이 나왔습니다. (Baumgartner et al. Neuron 2008)

신뢰게임은 사회적 상황에서 협렵관계를 실험적으로 알아보고자 고안된 게임입니다. 먼저 참가자 A와 B가 각각 12만 원씩 받습니다.A가 자신의 돈의 일부를(4만 원) B에게 투자하면, 투자한 돈은 3배가 되고(12만 원), B는 돈을 모두 가질 것인지(받은 12만 원+원래12만 원), A에게 일부를 돌려줄것인지(8만 원 돌려주면 A, B 모두 결국 16만 원씩 받게 됩니다.) 결정하게 됩니다. A는 B를 믿는 만큼 투자하는 금액을 늘려가겠지요.

이 게임에서 A에게 옥시토신을 흡입하게 하면, 상대방을 더 믿게 됩니다. B가 돈을 모두 갖더라도 한 번 더 믿고 투자하게 되지요. 하지만, B가 컴퓨터가 되면(Lottery game) 더는 옥시토신이 통하지 않게 됩니다. 옥시토신은 '사회적 상황에서의 신뢰'에만 작동하기 때문입니다.

이번 Fehr 그룹의 연구에 의하면 옥시토신은 amygdala, midbrain, dorsal striatum 영역의 활성화를 감소시켜 공포회로 (fear circuit) 작동을 막아서 신뢰를 강화시키는 역할을 합니다. 아래 그림에서 보면, 옥시토신을 흡입한 그룹(빨간색)에서 ACC, Caudate, Amygdala, midbrain 이 감소하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

이러한 연구를 통해 사회 공포증(social phobia)이나, 자폐증(autism)과 같은 사회성이 결여되어 생기는 정신질환들의 발병 메커니즘을 이해하고 치료하는데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것입니다.

옥시토신 향수를 만들면 어떨까요!!
여자친구에게 잘못한 일이 있을 때, 바람을 피다 들켰을 때,
옥시토신 향수를 선물하는 겁니다.
신뢰를 회복할 수 있습니다... (?)

ABSTRACT
Pre-clinical and clinical investigations have shown that methamphetamine (MA) causes long-term damages to the dopamine (DA) reward circuits resulting in motor and cognitive deficits. Yet, little is known about dynamical disturbance of cortical network in MA abusers. The present study aimed to investigate if MA abusers exhibit alterations in complexity of the EEG and to determine if these possible alterations are associated with their abuse patterns. EEGs were recorded from 48 former MA-dependent males and age- and sex-matched 20 healthy subjects. Approximate Entropy (ApEn), an information-theoretical measure of irregularity, of the EEGs was estimated to quantify the degree of cortical complexity. We found that the ApEn values in MA abusers were significantly lower than those of healthy subjects in most of the cortical regions, indicating decreased cortical complexity of MA abusers. These reductions were more prominent in severe MA abusers having a long period of MA use or large amount of MA intake for a previous year. This observed decrease in cortical complexity implicate impairment in specialization and integration of cortical activities owing to MA abuse. Moreover, ApEn values exhibited significant correlations with the clinical factors including abuse patterns, symptoms of psychoses (i.e. hallucinations and delusions), participation in sexual and criminal activities during MA use, past criminal records, and their concurrent drinking and smoking habits. The close associations of ApEn values with the psychiatric, behavioral, and social factors of MA abusers suggest that ApEn of EEG recordings can be used as a tool for quantitative diagnosis of MA abuse, which may lead to new methods for predicting and controlling pathologic behavior.

지난 3월에는 이탈리아 산토 스테파노에 2주 동안 Marie Curie School in Neuroscience학회에 다녀왔습니다. 'Large-Scale Interactions in Brain Networks and their Breakdown in Brain Diseases' 라는 주제에 대한 훌륭한 강연을 듣고, 토론하고, 전 세계에서 선발된 40명의 연구자와 소통하는 값진 경험을 했습니다. 학회에 참석할 수 있도록 지원해준 마리퀴리재단과 신경물리학연구실에 감사드립니다.

산토 스테파노는 로마에서 3시간 정도 차를 타고 내륙으로 들어가면 나오는 고산지대의 작은 마을입니다.

그야말로 이탈리아 깡촌에서 매일매일 밥,강연,커피,강연,밥,발표,토론,커피,강연,밥,강연,강연 일정으로 아침 8시부터 밤 11시까지 즐거운 생활(?)을 보냈습니다.

40명의 참가자는 미국, 또는 유럽 사람이 대부분이고, 중국에서도 한 명 왔습니다. 일주일 정도 지나면서대부분 사람과 얘기해볼 수 있었는데, 나이와 지위는 박사과정학생, 포스닥, 시니어 리서처, 교수로 다양했지만, 학문에 대한 열정으로, 공통의 관심사로 대화가 끊이지 않았습니다.

훌륭한 연구들을 많이 했고, 계속 좋은 논문에 review 를 쓰는Marcus Raichle, Wolf Singer 와 같은 '대가'들도 모든 학회 일정에 열정적으로 참여하는 게 놀라웠습니다.

학회에 참여하면서 스스로 너무 많이 부족하고, 아직 갈 길이 멀다는 것을 느낍니다.
